Mangroves Reforestation Project

The Mangrove Forestation Project aims to restore and protect mangrove ecosystems in the Ayeyarwady Region, enhancing biodiversity, strengthening climate resilience, and supporting sustainable livelihoods Implemented and aligned with PTTEP’s “Ocean for Life” strategy, the initiative focuses on annual mangrove planting and long-term maintenance to combat coastal erosion, rising sea levels, and loss of biodiversity. Conducted in collaboration with the Department of Forestry and supporting the Myanmar Reforestation and Rehabilitation Plan (MRRP), the project emphasizes both environmental conservation and community empowerment.

The project is structured in two phases:

  • Phase I (2023–2025): Annual planting of 20 acres of mangroves with a targeted survival rate above 80%.
  • Phase II (2026–2030): Expansion to 40 acres of mangrove planting per year, with maintenance of a cumulative 100-acre area.

Additionally, PTTEP Myanmar Asset has partnered with the Ecosystem Conservation and Community Development Initiative (ECCDI) to support a 30-month mangrove plantation program in the Whapana Community Forest area covering 100 acres and planting 120,000 trees, this initiative further strengthens community-based ecosystem restoration efforts.

The project directly benefits local communities through improved coastal protection, enhanced fisheries, and economic opportunities linked to sustainable forest management, while contributing to national and global climate action through greenhouse gas offsetting.
