PTTEP Myanmar Asset Awards Nine New Local Highschool Students HEAD Scholarships

29 January 2019, Yangon, Myanmar – PTTEP Myanmar Asset (PTTEP) organized the awarding ceremony, granted nine HEAD scholarships to new batch of selected local students, at Zawtika Operating Centre on 24 December 2018, reinforcing its commitment to developing Myanmar’s manpower to support the country’s development while empowering the local community in its operation area.

Comprising seven academic students and two technical students, the latest group of scholarship recipients are from Ohnbinkwin village, Kanbauk village, Migyaunglaung New village and Phaungdaw village in Yaephyu Township.

This brings the total number of scholarships granted to local students by PTTEP Myanmar Asset under the HEAD programme to 67, with a total value of about USD 133,000.

“Quality education is critical to every country’s development and equipping youths with good academic knowledge is one of the most valuable contribution into the community,” commented Mr. Piya Sukhumpanumet, General Manager, PTTEP Myanmar Asset.

“At PTTEP Myanmar Asset, we recognise the importance of education and are committed to uplift the community around our operation areas by supporting young, talented people to attain qualification in fields essential for Myanmar’s economic and social development.”

Launched in 2008, the HEAD scholarship is a full scholarship given annually to up to ten qualified high school students from low- and medium-income families residing in one of the 29 villages around PTTEP Myanmar Asset’s Zawtika project area. Eligible beneficiaries receive support in pursuing tertiary education diploma in five sectors which are in shortage of manpower and are considered critical for the country’s development – medical science, nursing, midwifery, education science and engineering.

To qualify for the scholarship, applicants need to demonstrate outstanding academic results and attitude through a transparent selection process conducted by a committee consisting of representatives such as the Township Education Officer, principals from local high schools and representatives from Myanma Oil and Gas Enterprise (MOGE) and PTTEP Myanmar Asset.

“I am very grateful to be given the opportunity pursue my dreams and become a teacher. After obtaining my diploma, I would like to come back to our village and help other children in our local school,” said Soe Ko Ko Htet, one of the latest HEAD scholarship awardees who will be pursuing a degree in educational science.

The father- U Cho Naing, added: “This scholarship is a great chance for my son’s future. Without the scholarship, we would not be able to afford his studies. Now, he gets an opportunity for a career in teaching.”

HEAD alumni are expected to continue supporting their community by working with governmental agencies after their graduation. Currently, 26 scholars are working with governmental agencies in the Zawtika project area.
