PTTEP Myanmar Asset's sixth Zawtika Charity Golf Tournament and 5th Safety, Security, Health and Environment Forum
5 Feb 2019
Supporting basic needs and uplifting living conditions of underprivileged children in the community
PTTEP raised USD 33,350 for Mahar Baw Di (YGW) Monastic Educational School in Thanet Chaung Village, Taikkyi Township, Yangon, through the sixth Zawtika Charity Golf Tournament held on 19 January 2019 at Dagon City Golf Club, Yangon. The proceeds will be used to construct a new dormitory building and provide necessities such as clothing, personal hygiene products and school bags for close to 540 orphans and less fortunate children living in the monastery.
Sayartaw U Tay Zain Na, Principal Monk, from Mahar Baw Di (YGW) Monastic Educational School said, “We started the school in 2004 under the registration of the Ministry of Religious Affairs and also recognized as orphanage – one of 17 across the nation that are opened by the charity organization Yellow Generation Wave. Currently, we take care of about 536 vulnerable children between 2 months and 20 years old.”
“We rely heavily on public donations to maintain our school and provide education for the children. At the moment, the children live and learn in tents made by bamboo and dried palm leaves which fail to shelter them sufficiently, especially during the monsoon and winter seasons,” he elaborated. “This is why the contributions from PTTEP Myanmar Asset and their partners is a great support for our work. It will directly benefit our children and provide a safe and supportive environment for their development.”
Launched in 2014 to fulfil basic needs and uplift the lifestyle of underprivileged children and people in the community, the Zawtika Charity Golf Tournament is PTTEP Myanmar Asset’s annual fundraising activity. This year’s tournament saw a total of 164 participants from Ministry of Electricity and Energy, Myanma Oil and Gas Enterprise, PTTEP Thailand headquarters, PTTEP Myanmar Asset, and PTTEP Myanmar Asset’s partners and contractors.
Since the launch of the Zawtika Charity Golf Tournament, PTTEP Myanmar Asset and its partners have raised more than USD 170,000 in total for six monastic and training schools, including the Malikha Training School for Girls, Kyite Wine Training School for Boys, Su Taung Pyae Monastery and Orphanage School, Nawaratt Monastic School, Lo Ta Ya Monastic School and Mahar Baw Di (YGW) Monastic Educational School.
“As a long-term partner and corporate social citizen investor in Myanmar, contributing back to the local community is one of our priorities,” said Mr. Piya Sukhumpanumet, General Manager of PTTEP Myanmar Asset. “I am proud that PTTEP Myanmar Asset is a part of Myanmar’s sustainable development in fields of economy, society, environment and human capital.”
Contributing to workplace safety and the development of Myanmar’s Oil and Gas Industry
Aside from the Zawtika Charity Golf Tournament, PTTEP Myanmar Asset also contributes to Myanmar’s development through its Safety, Security, Health and Environment (SSHE) Forum.
The SSHE Forum is an annual gathering of over 400 representatives from Myanmar’s oil and gas industry, including PTTEP Myanmar Asset partners and contractors, where participants share and exchange their best practices and knowledge concerning safety at work.
Held on 18 January, this year’s Forum was graced by U Han Zaw, Deputy Director General, Department of Electric Power and Planning, Ministry of Energy and Electricity and focused on achieving “SSHE Target Zero” which implies no injuries, no oil spills and no complaints while conducting operations in oil and gas fields.
“Today we focus on the sustainable environment, best practices in health and safety shared by Environmental Conservation Department and companies of the oil and gas industry,” commented U Han Zaw, Deputy Director General, Department of Electric Power and Planning, Ministry of Energy and Electricity at the event. “I strongly encourage you all to bring the best industry practices and useful Health, Safety and Environment information from this forum back to your workplace and improve the standards of safety at work.”
At the event, the PTTEP Top Management also reinforced PTTEP’s SSHE vision and urged all parties involved to collaborate to minimize the industry’s environmental impact and ensure everyone’s safety at work at all levels.
